Banganga: Lakshmi Narayan Temple

The following plaque describes the Lakshmi Narayan Temple at Banganga:

This shrine was built in the late 1890s by a merchant named Mathuradas Damodardas Jhaveri, in memory of his wife, Kesarbai. Dedicated to Lord Vishnu and his consort Goddess Lakshmi, it demonstrates a noticeable Gujarati influence.

The overall structure has undergone some changes over time, with noticeable increased height lines over the cornice bands. The side facade is characterized by segmental arch openings draped with stucco keystones.

The shrine is characterized by an Otla or platform at the entrance, commonly used as a public interaction space by locals, with two Dwarpalas (temple doorkeepers). Legend says that the two Dwarpalas - Jay and Vijay - were cursed to iose their divinity and take birth in the material world three times as Lord Vishnu's enemies. In the Treta Yuga, they were born as the brothers Ravana and Kumbhakarna.
