Banganga: Siddheshwar Mahadeo Temple

The following plaque describes the Siddheshwar Mahadeo Temple at Banganga:

The Siddheshwar Mahadeo Temple is a part of Jairamgir Bawa's Matth (a place where hermits live). This shrine is dedicated to Lord Shiva and was built on a Samadhi (memorial) in the 1830s.

The grayish-blue basalt faced shrine can be accessed through an archway. This leads to a compact Sabhamandap (congregation hall) with a stone Nandi (Lord Shiva's Bull) in the center. Kurma, the mythical turtle, can be found at the feet of Nandi. A stone Shivling (abstract representation of Lord Shiva) clad in copper and a stone image of Goddess Parvati are placed in the sanctuary.

Depicted by a pyramidical Shikhara (spire), the shrine abuts the Tank and is punctuated with two beautifully proportioned Deepsthambhs (pillars of light). One can find many Deepsthambhs around the Tank. They were at one time illuminated with lamps during festivals. Locals believe that they are built as memorial stones of ascetics.

Here is the corresponding description from K. Raghunathji, The Hindu Temples of Bombay, 1895:
