Banganga: Shree Venkatesh Balaji Temple

The following plaque (including original typos) describes the Shree Venkatesh Balaji Temple at Banganga:

Shree Venkatesh Balalji Temple is situated to the East of Banganga Tank, the area of nature's beauty of Mumbai, Lord Shree Venkatesh Balaji is a kuldaivat of Koil Community at Vasai/ Virar/ Naigaon and other peoples visit the temple regularly.

The Venkatesh Balaji Temple houses the idol of Lord Vishnu in the main sanctum and is a fine example of Maratha Architectural style (c. 1780-1818). As desired by late Ramshankar Bhavanishankar Dave two trustees appointed by him built the temple in the year 1789 A.D. on the plot of land gifted by Shri Rama Shenvi Lotilkar, friend of late Shri Dave.

The entrance is marked by a "nagarkhana" gateway with a Dwarpal. In the outscirt of the temple are marble idol of Shree Garuda, the Vahan of Lord Balaji and Riddhi Siddhi Ganpati and Deepmala for placing oil lamps during the rituals and festivals. In the spacious sabhamandap before the Gabhara, there are two marble idols of standing Dhanurdhari Bajrangbali and Shree Ganpati. In the main temple, the idol of Lord Shree Venkatesh Balaji with a rare feature of opened eyes brough from Giri in South India is in the center and the marble idol of Goddess Ambamata to the left hand of the main sanctum.

The Navratra festival is being celebrated annually and on the day of Ekadashi, there is procession (palakhi) of Lord Shree Venkatesh Balaji to the nearby Banganga vicinity.

The temple was renovated by the Official Trustee, Maharastra State under the orders of the Hon'ble High Court at Bombay and punar-pranpratistha of the idols was performed in February 2005.
